In the United Kingdom, Boxing Day is usually on December 26, a day after Christmas Day. Conventionally, this was the day cloth (material),food, money, or relevant valuable goods are distributed by employers to their employees. Nowadays, it has become an essential day for sporting events as well as the beginning of the post-Christmas sales.

Is Boxing Day a Public Holiday?

Boxing Day is apparently a public holiday. Every business, including schools and nearly every sector are closed.

Since 1871, the Boxing Day in the United Kingdom has been a bank holiday. In a case when December 26 falls on Saturday, the Monday that follows is declared a public holiday and for Sunday, the Tuesday that follows is declared a public holiday.

Since 1974, Boxing Day in Scotland is an extra bank holiday, which the Royal Proclamation established under the 1971 Banking and Financial Dealings Act.

What People are doing on Boxing Day?

Most people use Boxing Day to recover from any Christmas Day excesses and also spend some time with their friends, neighbors, and family. Other people prefer to go to the countryside for a walk, while others consider post-Christmas sales, which usually start on Boxing Day. For others, they prefer to spend part of their early morning and night to queue to access the stores when there are great bargains.

Boxing Day also features sporting events. The traditionally popular sporting event was fox hunting. During these events, there are hunters on horseback with red coat outfits and hunting dogs surrounding them - pictures of these are usually a symbolic of Boxing Day. These days, fox hunting is illegal. The popular sports are now football (soccer) and horse racing.

Public Life

Boxing Day remains a bank holiday. Boxing Day on a Saturday and Sunday will have the Monday and Tuesday that follow declared a bank holiday, respectively. Most organizations and schools are not opened on Boxing Day. Some do not even open all through the week between Christmas and New Year.

Boxing Day is usually the first day of post-Christmas sales for most stores. Public transport services may operate using special timetables. Most people spend this period with their friends or family. This is typically a very busy period for bus, train and plane services.
