What are moon phases?
The Moon does not produce its own light: we see the part lit by the Sun. As the Moon orbits Earth, that visible part changes. A full cycle of phases takes about 29.5 days.
New moon - The Moon is between Earth and the Sun. Its illuminated side faces away from us, making it almost invisible.
First quarter - First quarter: the right half of the disc is illuminated and the Moon is waxing. It is visible in the south in the evening.
Full moon - The Moon is on the opposite side of Earth from the Sun, so its whole illuminated disc is visible. It rises around sunset.
Last quarter - Last quarter: the left half of the disc is illuminated and the Moon is waning. It is best seen before dawn.
